Rehoming or Surrendering your Pet

Do you need resources to help you keep your pet at home or help with navigating the process of rehoming or surrendering your pet? We have a few helpful resources to help you navigate this big decision.

We have to start by saying rehoming a dog should be the last resort as we highly encourage you to consider and exhaust all possible alternatives before rehoming/surrendering your pet.

We often find that a pet being rehomed or surrendered is due to an owner feeling they have no choice or they are unaware of resources that can help them keep their pet. So the goal of this post is to help you find alternatives before making any decisions to rehome your adopted pet. After all, you adopted them and made the commitment of forever at that time.

Rehoming Your Own Pet

Rehoming your pet should be a last resort. If circumstances still require you to find a new home here are a few helpful tips…

  • Check with people you already know to see if they are willing to give them a home –  family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers etc.
  • Create a profile on Rehome, where you can have your pet featured on www.adoptapet.com. You can then review applications for people interested in adding your pet to their family. Rehome is partners with Zoetis, PetSmart The Kin and Pedigree.
