Foster-to-Adopt Trial Program

Our Foster-to-Adopt Trial Program is designed to give both you and your new pet a short adjustment period before an adoption is finalized. It’s a great option for families who want to ensure the match feels right in a real home environment. Dogs/puppies 6+ months or older are eligible for this program.

Trial Timeframe

  • The standard Foster-to-Adopt trial period is 7 days.

  • Extensions are only granted when approved in writing by an Animal Rescue of New England (ARNE) Board Member.

$200 Refundable Deposit

A $200 refundable deposit is required to begin a Foster-to-Adopt trial.

This deposit helps ensure serious commitment and confirms that the adopter will show up for scheduled pick-up when the pet arrives (including transport and quarantine pickups, when applicable).

  • If you move forward with adoption, the deposit is applied toward the adoption donation.

  • If the adoption is not finalized, the deposit is refunded according to program terms.

During the Trial Period

While in the Foster-to-Adopt trial:

  • The pet remains under the ownership of ARNE until the adoption is finalized.

  • The foster-to-adopt family is responsible for the pet’s food and daily care during the trial period.

  • ARNE remains available for support and guidance throughout the trial.

Adoption Decision Timeline

  • Families must notify ARNE of their decision to adopt on or before the final day of the 7-day trial.

  • If you choose to adopt, the adoption is finalized at that time.

  • If you decide not to proceed, you must be willing to continue fostering until a new adoptive or foster-to-adopt home is secured.

Why We Offer Foster-to-Adopt

This program helps set everyone up for success by allowing time for:

  • Decompression and adjustment

  • Learning household routines

  • Confirming compatibility (energy level, lifestyle, other pets, etc.)

Our goal is always a thoughtful, successful, and lasting placement.
